10 Tips to Make Your Mattress Last Longer

Published: 30 Sep, 2020

The average lifespan of a regular mattress is 8-10 years. The lifespan of UrbanBed mattresses is 15 years. But what about when the period (10 years or 15 years) is over? Usually, the end of the manufacturer's warranty of a mattress is presumed as a time to replace it. To an extent, the presumption is valid, but not in all cases. As it turns out, the durability of a mattress can outlast the manufacturer’s warranty i.e. a mattress can be used for an additional couple of years without compromising on sleep quality, hygiene and health. In other words, UrbanBed mattresses can last longer than their warranty periods - more returns on your investment, more value.

How? Just take proper precautions and witness the statement come to life using your own eyes. Need a few tips? Read the blog.

10 Tips to Make Your Mattress Last Longer

1. Set the foundation right

Ensuring the right foundation is the key to a long-lasting mattress. UrbanBed mattresses require firm, solid support: a bed frame that can support the weight of sleepers and the mattress. Ensuring the right support helps preserve the integrity of materials and prevent early wear.

Inspect your bed’s support every year to ensure it is still in a condition to support the mattress properly.

2. Use a protector from the beginning

Using a mattress protector goes a long way in ensuring your investment in a mattress reaps the value you deserve. Additionally, using a mattress protector from the very beginning is one of the best and simplest ways to ensure a long life for your mattress.

A good quality mattress protector offers waterproof protection to your mattress, guards against spills and accidents, and protects the materials inside your bed from damage.

3. Wash your beddings regularly

We’ve already established the importance of cleaning your beddings in our previous blog. But, regular cleaning of the beddings also keeps mattress-damaging elements such as dust mites, dead skin, fungi, and bacteria from getting into your mattress. Wash the bed sheets and blankets every week to keep your bed hygienic and protect the mattress.

4. Clean your mattress once every three months

A mattress protector certainly protects your mattress from liquid spills, dust mites, allergens etc. to an extent, but it is not enough. Vacuum cleaning your mattress every once in three months ensures a hygienic sleep environment, adding to its durability and longevity.

Follow the mattress cleaning instructions shared in our previous blog titled “Cleaning your mattress in 8 steps.”

5. Get your pets their own beds

If you’ve got pets, you know you are not the only one who likes a cosy bed to sleep on. But, letting your pets on your bed is bad for your mattress. No matter how well-groomed your pets are, they drool and shed hair and skin cells just like humans. And once you let your dogs on your bed, all that ends up on your mattress. Your pet might not know it, you do.

That said, we know it's almost impossible to keep your furry friends off the bed. But, we’ve got a sure shot trick that’ll do the impossible or at least reduce the frequency - get them their own comfy bed to snuggle in. Need help? Check out UrbanBed’s Pet Bed - a perfect bed for your pets.

6. Flip & turn the mattress every 3 months

Zen Memory Foam Mattress or Core Dual Support Orthopaedic Mattress, both types will benefit with regular rotation, possibly every 2 to 4 months. Rotating the mattress after every 2 to 4 months helps promote more even wear. Not doing so will increase the likelihood of depressions and softening.

7. Jumping on the bed is a big NO

Jumping on the mattress, the occasional pillow fights and other such activities are hard on your mattress and the bed frame. So, no matter how tempted the kids (your and the ones inside you) are to use the mattress as a trampoline, helping them control their urge is a ‘money-saving’ idea.

8. Take care of the unwanted hitchhikers

Bed bugs are the biggest threat to the longevity of your mattress. They are almost difficult to get rid of once they infiltrate your mattress. So, not letting them into your bed in the first place is the best way to protect your mattress from the havoc they create.

If you travel too much, for business or leisure, inspect the bed in the rented hotel room or hostel for bed bugs before using it.

9. Let the sunlight in

You may or may not be a morning person but UrbanBed mattresses are. Every once in a while when the sun is shining bright, strip the mattress and let it absorb the sunlight for as long as possible. Sunlight helps remove the excess moisture and keeps dust mite populations in check.

10. No unwanted business on the bed

Your bed is meant for sleeping. Unwanted businesses such as snacking, watching movies on the bed, playing with pets on it and so on are strictly prohibited on the bed. The longer you follow this rule, the easier it will be for you to make your mattress last longer than expected.

The lifespan of a mattress depends on multiple factors. But, following the best practices mentioned above can go a long way in helping you ensure a higher value from your investment in rest.
